Controversy erupted when Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi, and Xuan Yi who are members of the girl group Cosmic Girls (also known as WJSN), declared their support for cotton produced in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. On the 25th of last month, each of the three made a post on their Weibo saying, “I support Xinjiang cotton.”
They also attached images to their post supporting Xinjiang cotton, which are based on the Swedish fashion brand H&M logo.
Earlier, global fashion brands such as H&M and Nike have boycotted Xinjiang cotton one after another. The move is aimed at criticizing the Chinese government’s controversy over the crackdown on human rights of the Xinjiang Uyghurs.
As the news became known, a boycott of the bands is taking place in China. In Korea, however, anti-Chinese sentiment is mounting, which the Chinese-style drama Joseon Exorcist being abolished after only two episodes of broadcasting, and a wave of criticism is going up against those who supported Xinjiang cotton.
Netizen’s are harshly criticizing the three, saying, “I hate them so much,” and “Why did you make your debut in Korea if you were going to do that?”
Since 2018, WJSN has been working as a 10-member group, excluding Chinese members Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi, and Xuan Yi. At that time, Starship Entertainment explained that the three members were missing due to their activities in China.
WJSN is also continuing their schedules and activities as a 10-member group for their new album ‘UNNATURAL’, which came out on March 31st.
