More than a dozen McDonald’s stores in Indonesia were suspended on the 9th (local time), the first day of the sale of the BTS meal.
As crowds of people came to the stores all over the country at once, they decided to close the store for fear of spreading the Coronavirus. The BTS meal, which was first introduced in countries around the world at the end of last month, started selling in Indonesia for the first time.
According to AFP and local media Jakarta Post, more than 13 McDonald’s stores in the capital Jakarta and some cities have temporarily suspended operations.
Foreign media reported that the incident occurred due to a rush of customers and food delivery drivers to buy the BTS meal. In Bogor, a city on the southern outskirts of Jakarta on the 9th, dozens of delivery drivers poured into stores to purchase BTS meals, creating a rare scene.
“We don’t want the city to become a Corona-risk area again,” said Pazar Purwato, head of Smarang City’s public order agency. “We have temporarily suspended operations at four of Smarang’s six McDonald’s stores.” Smarang is the fifth largest city in Indonesia.
The Jakarta Post said at least five stores were also closed in Jakarta. Authorities in Jakarta did not respond to the report.
Starting with the U.S., Canada, and Brazil on the 26th of last month, McDonald’s is selling BTS sets in 49 countries on six continents. It is a menu that sells 10 pieces of McNuggets, medium-sized fries and cola, and “Sweet Chili” and “Cajan” sauce developed by McDonald’s Korea.
